Kara & Floki’s Banquettes

As we talked about the dining area in their new home, the first step was to create about eight feet of bench seating under the front window, and the custom table we were planning would span almost that length. In any home, storage is important, so we settled on storage banquettes to provide plenty of seating and convenient storage. This project ended up using much of the remaining two-inch-thick white ash from Kara’s platform bed project a few years ago. Once in place under their front window, these banquettes have become a favorite sitting place for family meals, homework, and artwork, too!

As I look back on this project, I’m reminded of the importance of thoughtful design and creative problem-solving in woodworking. By repurposing the remaining white ash from Kara’s earlier project, we not only reduced waste but also added a unique touch to the space. The banquettes have become a beloved hub in the home, where family and friends can gather, relax, and enjoy each other’s company. Their versatility has also made them a favorite spot for everyday activities, from homework and meals to art projects and quiet conversations. In the end, this project was a perfect example of how a well-designed and well-built piece of furniture can become a true centerpiece of a home.
