The duel challenges of Katie’s Scrabble Box were to create a custom storage box for an existing Scrabble set, and to incorporate some CNC artwork into the project. Using hard maple and birch plywood, I decided to insert a machined maple medallion into the birch top.
Taking dimensions from the Scrabble game components, the detailed design was first created in SketchUp, including a removable small parts tray nestled under the main game board. The medallion artwork was created in VCarve Desktop, which also was used to generate the G code to drive the CNC router.
Since the inside of the lid would make a great surface for the dice game, Farkel, the lid was positioned with alignment pins and secured with four latches, so that it could be easily separated from the bottom. The entire project was finished with several coats of Minwax satin polyurethane.
